Background and personality information for those who know nothing about Transformers or Starscream
BACKGROUND: Four million years ago, Primus, the Lord of Order and Light, saw fit to gift life to a machine race on a world called Cybertron, called the Transformers. For a time, the Transformers lived in peace, until one day a war began between two factions, the Autobots and Decepticons. This war raged for millions of years, devastating the planet and causing a total collapse of Transformer society as the Decepticons took over most of the planet. The war consumed the resources of Cybertron beyond repair, and soon both factions ran out of energy. Thus it was that they cast their eyes to the sky.
Soon, the Decepticons discovered a world rich in energy, one filled with powerful stores of the substance Energon – energy in solid form. The Autobots gave chase, and high above the planet, the two forces fought. During the battle, their ship was damaged, and they crash-landed on the world below. As they did not have enough energy left upon crashing, both sides – Autobot and Decepticon – fell into a deep and terrible slumber, known as stasis-lock.
In the year 1984, a chance eruption of a nearby volcano re-activated the ship's systems as it drew energy from its surroundings. This in turn re-activated the Transformers on board, beginning with the Decepticons.
Upon emerging from the ship, the Decepticons went in search of the energon, and other resources. The Autobots followed, with the intent of stopping the Decepticons and taking the energon for themselves. However, they soon discovered that this planet was inhabited... by humans. It was Earth, and their problems were only just beginning...
The Decepticons, of course, did not care, treating humans as tools or slaves at best and as canon fodder or insects at worst. The Autobots, on the other hand, befriended the humans and did their best to defend them from the Decepticons. So it went...
BACKGROUND HISTORY: Millions of years ago, Starscream was a scientist assigned to search for interesting or habitable planets with his friend Skyfire (also a scientist). The two happened upon Earth, when they were separated by fierce winds. Starscream searched for his friend but was unable to find him. Shortly thereafter, Megatron announced his bid for world domination. Starscream, with his own ambitions on ruling Cybertron, offered his services as both scientist and warrior, plotting to overthrow Megatron the entire time.
After nearly a thousand years of war, Cybertron's resources had been drained dry, forcing Autobot and Decepticon alike to leave the planet in search of new energy sources. A fierce space battle caused both groups to crash-land on the same planet Starscream had been scouting years earlier. Millions of years later, the Decepticons woke up and went in search of Energon, laying waste to the humans wherever they went, and thwarted by the Autobots at every turn. In the meantime, Starscream continued to insist that he was far better suited for the job of leadership than Megatron, and to plot and plan behind the other Decepticon's back.
Unfortunately for Starscream, he had a little trouble keeping his mouth shut and forming plans that actually worked, so he was unable to do so. He would say that his time would eventually come, but it never did. Time and time again, he would come within inches of attaining what he desired, only to have Megatron catch him. His own cowardice helped not at all, as he was terrified (and rightly so) of fighting Megatron face to face. The only reason Megatron never killed Starscream outright was because the Decepticon leader knew he could count on Starscream's plans failing, and because Starscream was extraordinarily intelligent and a powerful fighter.
However, in 2005, during the Decepticon's raid on Autobot City, Megatron found himself decimated by Optimus Prime and on the verge of stasis lock. Starscream naturally took this opportunity to boot Megatron out of an airlock and take command of the Decepticons. He even went so far as to orchestrate a coronation, an ostentatious and indeed, outright silly affair.
But at the moment of his crowning, he had an unexpected guest: Galvatron, Megatron reborn by the power of Unicron the Destroyer, the Transformers god of destruction and chaos. Galvatron destroyed Starscream with a single blast of energy, obliterating the traitor outright.
But that was not the end...
As it turned out, Starscream's spark – that is, his soul – was mutated into an abnormal form, that is, immortal. He could not rejoin with the Allspark, the source of all Transformer life, and thus was set to wandering the universe in a disembodied form. Twice he possessed other Transformers in an attempt to begin his schemes of betrayal and conquest again, and twice he was ejected, unable to bring his plans to resolution. He was thus shot through the universe, eventually encountering a space-time anomaly, whereupon he was warped to a time millions of years ago, when the first proto-humans roamed the earth.
Oddly enough, a number of Transformers from his future had become stranded there, and he thus possessed the body of one of their number, Waspinator. Being Starscream, he enacted an ill-fated plan to overthrow that timeline's Megatron (a different being than the original Megatron) but was ultimately thwarted by Blackarachnia and Optimus Primal. Thus it was that his Spark was once again set to wandering the universe. He swore his revenge – even if it took him a thousand years.
PERSONALITY: Starscream is a traitor. This is the defining aspect of his personality. He is incredibly self-centered, even sociopathic, caring only for himself and no one else. He'll pretend to be your friend as long as it remains convenient for him, and at the first sign that he could benefit somehow from betraying you, he will. His traitorous actions are almost a compulsion in some ways – even when it would be advantageous to remain in a proper alliance, he can't help but try to squeeze his way into a position of power by backstabbing those above him.
Thankfully for the world, his schemes almost always backfire, primarily due to his own cowardice, short-sightedness, dishonesty, and arrogance. He thinks so much of himself that he seldom sees the flaws in his plans until it is far too late.
He thinks even less of humans than he does of most other Transformers, seeing them as slaves at best and an infestation of pests at worst.
However, he is more than willing to lie, cheat, and scheme to get what he wants – he'll even pretend to be on the side of the heroes for as long as it's convenient.
